Today we talk about what homesteading IS, trying new things and so much more in a return episode of THE SPICY SISTERS with Amy Dingmann.

Featured Event: SRF Digital Passes

Paul Wheaton is about to launch a new Kickstarter campaign on Tuesday March 14, 2023.  If you’re new around here, you may not be aware that Paul’s kickstarters always give away a massive amount of amazing stuff for just a buck.  The caveat – you have to back the kickstarter in the first 48 hours of the campaign to get all the earlybird rewards.  The only way to make sure you don’t miss out is by clicking “notify me on launch” on the kickstarter page.

Click “notify me on launch” here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paulwheaton/low-tech?ref=5xwwb3&token=23631798

The kickstarter is for the Low Tech Laboratory Movie, featuring innovations in homesteading, woodland craft, hot tubs, kilns, forges, textiles, bees, foraged clay pottery, mycelium, solar power, off-grid solutions, and more.

The earlybirds alone are worth well over $100 bucks.  They gave me an exclusive sneak peak of what’s included:

-Videos about heating Greenhouses with Rocket Mass Heaters, and Truly Passive Greenhouse Design

-The fourth issue of Living Woods Magazine

-The Hidden Half of Nature, a microbial presentation by Anne Bikle and David Montgomery

– Toby Hemenway’s excellent Permaculture Voices keynote, ” Backing Off an Energy Cliff”

– An issue of Modern Homesteading Magazine

– An ebook about practical homesteading

– Tiny house magazine issue 121

– And issue of Permaculture Design Magazine

– A Kelly Hart film about natural building

Don’t miss out on this ridiculous offer.  Everything you need to up your homesteading and self-reliance knowledge, for as little as $1.  But you have to click the “notify button” to get it . . .

Louise Milleman is an earth-loving, tree-hugging, un-schooling, freedom-fighting, world-traveling citizen of the entire world who has went from being a full-time digital nomad, traveling this big beautiful globe with her family for the last 5 years to building a regenerative off grid homestead with her husband and her 2 little girls. She is the founder of Forgotten Ways PMA as she believes that the best way for us to protect our future is to take a step back into the forgotten ways of the past. They spend their time connecting with the land while they connect with each other. She believes that life IS learning and that learning IS life. There is no distinction. By living a slower-paced life and stopping to provide guidance along the way, they are “teaching” their kids real life skills by living out their real life dreams!

Weekly Shopping Report from Joe

First stop was Dollar Tree. Stock in the frozen food coolers has notably increased; they’re probably at least half full, with a decent variety. The drink aisle and coolers also were a lot more full, with good variety. There were more vitamins in the health area too.

Home Depot was next. Sonia stayed in the car, so I just ran in and out. A 2x4x8 remains at $3.35. I also picked up a long Diablo reciprocating saw blade for use on some saplings in the yard.

Aldi was third. I thought the shelves looked more stuffed than usual; there was plenty of product. We found everything we wanted. Eggs have come down, perhaps to $2.7x? We also found heavy cream, and there were multiple boxes of it. We got a case of their canned cat food, leaving at least two more.

Weigel’s was last. My usual station is running on a backup pump, and the flow rate is so low that I aborted a fillup on Thursday evening after just five gallons. The other station is running just fine. The price is the same, with a gallon of untainted regular still $3.999.

Frugality Tip

Home repairs can be overwhelming. Some times you need to “hire a guy”. You have to be ok with knowing your limits.  I know I can’t (yet) do framing and stucco, but I can paint. I saved us $300 by buying a gallon of stucco waterproofing and a gallon of paint. It will take me longer than if I paid a guy, but any time I can shave a few bucks off a project I will.

P.S. I watched the stuccoing process, and feel pretty confident that I can do a small project or repair next time.

Main topic of the Show: Crisis Communications

What is crisis communications

Why did I think of it? (Dentist)

What should you do if you find yourself in a tense situation? (Photoshopped head on a campaign photo, Al Gore)

  • Acknowledge that providing facts as soon as possible is key and communicate that you are gathering facts so that you can explain the situation
  • Do NOT make up answers to anything. Not ever. Not even if you think you know
  • Clarify who is qualified to speak on this matter (Is it you, someone in your organization or family, etc). Ensure everyone KNOWS who to send inquiries to
  • Release the facts to the media, on your communications platforms etc. (Media statement vs press release)
  • Never repeat the accusation – we do not need out of context audio clips of you saying you did something that you did not say
  • Handle interview requests as you usually should, by first researching the media outlet before agreeing to an interview
  • Schedule down time
  • Rely on the facts in every communication and get good at being called a liar, a poopy head, etc
  • Set a communications schedule moving through the crisis and STICK to it

Why should this matter to a homesteader? (Pig picture)

What about the people who lie all the time? They don’t rely on facts
